Auckland Grammar School Cycling

Welcome to cycling at Auckland Grammar in 2011.  We are in the process of planning for the year - Captain, coaching, staffing, parent committee, helpers, recruitment of new juniors (and new seniors & new staff) and hope to get as many of you involved as possible.  Your support in the past has been most appreciated by both the School and the boys and we hope to continue the tradition and build on our successes.

Auckland Grammar School, with well over 30 national championship titles in senior and junior cycling competition, will remain focussed on training 13-18 year-old boys to reach their athletic potential through its school racing programme.

The 2010 season was very successful with the "Grammar Hammer's" phenomenal wins for both the senior and junior TTT (Team Time Trial) squads at Nationals.

The 2009 season ended in an agonisingly close finish in second place at the National Secondary Schools Team Time Trial Championships - just 1.5 seconds behind the winners.  This followed on from joint first place for Grammar in the 2009 Auckland Waterfront Time Trial Series.

In 2008, after two years running as national champions, the Senior Auckland Grammar Cycling Team settled for a bronze medal at Palmerston North for the National Team Time Trial Championships.

This came one week after both Senior and Junior A teams set all-time records on Auckland’s waterfront for the 2008 Finals Day. In addition, Grammar riders earlier in the season won no fewer than 12 individual medals at Mt Wellington’s NZ Secondary School Individual Cycling Championship.

This built on success in 2007 with our Juniors and Seniors both winning their respective New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Team Time Trial Championship races, with both teams also winning in record times.

We now look forward to following on this great tradition as we look forward to the seasons ahead for AGS Cycling - THE GRAMMAR HAMMER.

Parent assistance has been a major factor in Grammar Cycling achieving the level of success that has been reached in the past.  An active parent committee assists the Teacher In Charge, providing administrative support and assistance wherever possible.

In addition, all parents are encouraged to help out Grammar Cycling in some way where possible - experience not essential !  There are a number of areas where willing assistance is appreciated, with areas of possible contribution including:

  • marshalling at race events
  • massage prior to racing
  • coaching / training assistance
  • driving support cars at training camps
  • riding as adult supervisors to assist coaches when boys are out on the road
  • kitchen duties at a number of functions
  • organising events
  • timekeeping
  • photography
  • administrative work for the committee
  • secretarial support
  • treasurer duties

If you would like to help out, please send an email - the more help we get the easier the work load on everyone.  In addition, by helping you will get to know other parents involved and enjoy the camaraderie of the Grammar Cycling community.

As parents, if you can, make sure you keep the time free in September so you can join everyone at the National Secondary School Championships in Palmerston North. It's the main competitive event of the season - with 3 days of racing in September during the school holidays- and also a tremendous time for all of the Grammar Cycling squad, boys, teachers, coaches and parents, to be together, to provide support at the racing and enjoy a range of social events together.
